About Shahi Qila (Fort)
Travel guide & information
Shahi Fort is an important historical fort located on the banks of the Gomti River in Jaunpur city. The fort was constructed in 1362 CE during the reign of Firoz Shah Tughlaq. Its location along the Gomti River gives the monument both historical significance and scenic appeal. The massive structure and surviving remains of the fort provide a glimpse into the medieval history and architectural heritage of Jaunpur.
The inner gateway of the fort is approximately 26.5 feet high and 16 feet wide, while the central gateway rises to around 36 feet. A large dome was constructed above the central entrance. Much of the original structure has been lost over time, but the eastern gateway, interior arches, and other surviving architectural remains still reflect the grandeur of the historic fort.
The impressive gateway in front of the fort was constructed by Munim Khan with security considerations in mind. The gateway was decorated with blue and yellow stones, adding to its architectural appearance. Inside the fort complex, there is also a Turkish-style hammam, or bathhouse, along with a mosque. These surviving structures provide valuable insight into the architectural traditions and lifestyle of the period.
The mosque attributed to Ibrahim Barbak within the fort complex is another notable architectural feature. Its design displays influences of Hindu and Buddhist craftsmanship, reflecting the diverse artistic traditions that can be found in the architecture of medieval Jaunpur.
The fort's location beside the Gomti River offers beautiful views of the river and the city of Jaunpur. Today, Shahi Fort remains an important part of the historical and cultural heritage of Jaunpur and is a significant destination for people interested in history, architecture, and heritage tourism.
