About Akbari Bridge

Travel guide & information

The famous Shahi Bridge of Jaunpur is a historic and architecturally significant bridge built across the Gomti River. According to the Tarikh-i-Muimi, the bridge was constructed in 1564 CE during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, reportedly on his orders and under the supervision of Munain Khan Khana. It is regarded as a distinctive example of bridge architecture in India. One of its notable features is that the main roadway is constructed at ground level, reflecting its unique architectural planning.

The Shahi Bridge is approximately 26 feet wide and has parapets measuring about 2 feet 3 inches in width on both sides. Small domed kiosks, or gumbads, were constructed at the junctions of the bridge's arches. In earlier times, these kiosks were used as shops, making the bridge not only an important route for transportation but also a part of the commercial and social life of the city.

At the centre of the bridge stands a large statue of a lion placed on a quadrangular platform. The sculpture depicts the lion positioned on the back of an elephant, with the lion's two front paws resting forward. This distinctive artistic feature adds to the visual and historical character of the bridge. A mosque is situated opposite the sculpture, adding another important architectural and religious element to the site.

The northern side of the bridge has 10 arches, while the southern side has 5 arches. These arches are supported by octagonal pillars, which provide both structural strength and distinctive architectural character. The arches, pillars, domed kiosks, and other architectural elements demonstrate the craftsmanship and construction traditions of the historical period.

Today, the Shahi Bridge remains an important part of Jaunpur's historical and cultural identity. Standing over the Gomti River, it offers a glimpse into the city's architectural heritage and historic urban landscape. Its distinctive design, historical background, and surviving architectural features make the Shahi Bridge an important landmark for visitors interested in the history, architecture, and cultural heritage of Jaunpur.
